Looks for bacteria in the bloodstream itself, in a fever that will not settle. Takes up to five days, because the bacteria have to grow.

Before your test

• •Carry on taking your regular medicines unless your doctor has said otherwise.
• •Bring the doctor's prescription if you have one — it helps the lab file the report to them.
