Liver Function Test (LFT)

About this test

Eight or nine measurements of how the liver is working — the enzymes it leaks when it is irritated, the bilirubin that causes jaundice, the proteins it makes. Asked for with jaundice, on long-term medicines, and in a yearly check.

Before your test

• •Do not eat for 8 hours before the sample. Water is fine.
• •Carry on taking your regular medicines unless your doctor has said otherwise.
• •Bring the doctor's prescription if you have one — it helps the lab file the report to them.
