About this test

A protein made by the prostate gland. Raised levels can mean an enlarged, inflamed or, sometimes, cancerous prostate. A yearly test for men over fifty.

Before your test

• •Avoid cycling and sexual activity for two days before — both can raise the level.
• •Carry on taking your regular medicines unless your doctor has said otherwise.
• •Bring the doctor's prescription if you have one — it helps the lab file the report to them.
