About this test

Your blood sugar after a night without food. It is the first test for diabetes and the one used to follow it.

Before your test

  • •Nothing to eat after dinner; the sample is taken the next morning.
  • •Do not eat for 10 hours before the sample. Water is fine.
  • •Carry on taking your regular medicines unless your doctor has said otherwise.
  • •Bring the doctor's prescription if you have one — it helps the lab file the report to them.
